Llandeilo Book Fair 2016 in pictures and review

A great day during which I met some lovely authors and lots of new readers. Fun, informative and productive. Well done Christoph for organising the book fair.

The first Llandeilo Book Fair happened on Sat 30th April and I have to say it was everything I hoped it would be, and more. 13116117_10154111069195890_3030147215879274381_o13119740_1091090187580860_3565965637614321087_o
From the first day of organising it people have been supportive: friends, local residents, businesses, schools, the libraries, the press, authors and readers. It’s been a dream to organise. 13118978_10153346314352132_7476212192213809584_n
I need to thank Helen, Robin and Luke from Caffi  lechyd Da for doing such a great job with the catering, Tracey and her team from Heavenly Chocolate for donating the cake and all their advise and support, Naomi Edwards from the local school and Janet Lewis from the library.

Also thanks to the best event day team ever: Hugh Roberts, Ryan and Meryl – Thanks for running everything so smoothly and professional.13119896_10154111069815890_7673435550460422218_o

We had a busy hall all day long and huge interest in the workshops, readings, talks and the discussion panel. The footfall was more than…

Truth and fiction – The Unexploded Man

Watching recent events in the world can be quite disturbing but the real world is also a great source of ideas. Consider this – The Russian Bear is stirring. After years of economic sanctions, isolation and rejection by the West, Russia is on the offensive. The Crimea is annexed and the West does nothing. Russian militias have occupied Eastern Ukraine while NATO, paralysed and impotent, looks on.

Supported by Russia, a brutal proxy war continues in Syria driving millions of refugees towards Western Europe, destabilising country after country. The very fabric of the European Union faces collapse as soldiers string barbed wire across the continent. ‘So what is really going on?’ we ask ourselves as we watch Jon Snow on Channel 4 News and the, seemingly endless, stream of people fleeing the fighting. Who is really responsible for these terrible events and why are they doing it? Not easy questions to answer. Of course we all have an opinion. What, I wonder, if there is a master plan at work? A scheme so dastardly that it would be difficult to comprehend and Britain is a key target in a war we don’t even know we’re fighting.

In Britain, the political classes are under attack. Dissidents who dare to speak out are murdered. Remember Litvinenko, killed with radioactive poison and there are others. The political landscape is changing. Helped by unseen forces, unilateral disarmers are gaining power in Westminster. Don’t believe me? Think Jeremy Corbyn. “If elected I will never, under any circumstances, use a nuclear weapon,” promises the leader of the British Opposition and the people love him for it.

No man knew more about the character flaws of certain members of Parliament than journalist David Barnett. These flaws could be exploited to undermine Britain’s security, but Barnett was always professionally discreet – right up to the moment when he was found murdered. Barnett is The Unexploded Man. A Political Warfare Thriller I’m publishing on the 22nd March. Pre-order copies are now available.

Serendipity

I’ve been reworking a book called ‘Alternative 3′ my father, who is now 85, first published forty years ago. Not an easy project. For a start there was no digital manuscript. He wrote it on a manual typewriter. Rather than retyping the whole 95,000 words I used the free optical character recognition app. within Microsoft Word – never knew it existed before – to produce a first draft. It was littered with errors. ‘H’s became ‘d’s and where it didn’t recognise a word it either guessed, wrote nonsense or just missed it out. Reminds me of the man who invented predictive text who died last week. His funday is next monkey.

However, I digress. The original book was the basis for a one hour television documentary shown in 1977. The documentary also called Alternative 3 was shown by ITV and explained, in some detail, how the moon landing were a front for a far more ambitious project: Building a colony on Mars, a refuge for world leaders and their chums to escape to because they knew global warming would eventually destroy the planet. The documentary is a bit dated, by today’s standards, but still a professional production. At the time, global warming was almost unheard of. Now, its significance is recognised by most people and dad’s book is very pertinent to today’s problems as the earth’s climate changes. Are the world’s leader planning to escape and leave the rest of us to stew? Who can say!
Alternative 3 had considerable success and was translated into a number of different languages including Japanese. The Japanese, it seems, are particularly fond of conspiracy theories.

I published the reworked book last December and then a strange thing happened. A Facebook friend sent me a link to a film released the previous month called ‘Packing for Mars‘ and, to my surprise, the entire plot was based on Dad’s original book. It even named his book as the original idea.

I contacted Frank Jacob, the film’s producer and explained my father was very much alive and kicking adding that he owned the copyright to his material and we had a most constructive conversation. The two hour feature film is a super production and dad is over the moon (excuse the pun) with it.
Serendipity indeed.
